Maternity Modeling

Modeling while expecting is one of the greatest joys of any working Fashion Model.  I know it was for me! These are the Photos you are really going to treasure the most in your career!  I remember going to my Bookings… so excited.. because my baby was going with me!!

Nowadays Most designers are designing a Maternity line and there are numerous Maternity Magazines, Advertising Campaigns and Catalogs for the expecting Model. So don’t think because you are pregnant that you can not keep working.

So models already signed to an Agency, I have found it’s best to stay represented by your Fashion Agency while pregnant. You will continue to get your day rate and see better clients then switching to a “maternity Agency.” Of course, if your Agency doesn’t rep Maternity Models then you must look for an agency that does. Unlike Fashion Agencies that want to see regular snapshots when you’re first starting out.. A Maternity Agency would prefer you have a Photobook with you tearsheets &/or Pictures. This is because you only have a time span of about 4 months that you can work! You can’t work until you look pregnant and that’s usually at about 4 months (at least). So when you send in pics to agencies.. whether through mail or email.. Show all your best professional fashion work and include 4 recent digitals of you in a swimsuit or form fitting clothes. Agents still love to see YOU.. what you really look like, all natural and smiley. ALWAYS INCLUDE YOUR DUE DATE!

If you live near a major Fashion City (Miami, NYC, LA, Chicago) then go in for an Open Call.  You are more likely to be signed to an Agency if you live pretty close to a major city. Bring your Photobook and your SMILE!! It’s very important for agents to see that your energetic and you  have a great personality. This will make all the difference in this type of work as most of the jobs you’ll book is all about looking Healthy and HAPPY while pregnant.

If you haven’t seen it already.. check out my Video on “How to take Maternity Pics” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKGffwL9hIM&NR=1.  Don’t take your digitals unless you’ve watched my Video because it will explain exactly what agents and clients look for…  You’ll want to know exactly how to do this properly because once you are signed to an Agency.. your Booker (agent) is going to ask you many times to email her recent pics (digitals).  This is because not only is your belly constantly growing but also in the modeling business clients ALWAYS request recent pics of models.  They don’t want to spend the money to book you and possibly fly you there and then you show up and look nothing like the pics in your book online. This is why you will constantly be taking recent digitals in this business.  I have included in the side panel some example pics of me while working with FORD while I was expecting.. that I sent in. You will see I am wearing formfitting clothes with barely any makeup on. Clients do not want to see you all made up. Please don’t have a fan blowing your hair either. Just simple pics of you. You can have your Mom, Dad, Sister or Best Friend take the pics.. it really doesn’t matter as long as you look Natural!!!

I have heard lots of Models say they worked like crazy while pregnant.. there is a lot of work out there and a constant new crop of pregnant models. I knew a girl who was flown to Tahiti for 5 days to shoot a story (8 page layout) for a magazine!! That’s pretty Awesome, No?  I worked a lot while pregnant and I can tell you it was a ton of fun! I shot the cover of E-Pregnancy, Parents Magazine and Fit Pregnancy Magazine (see side panel)  which was a real honor because that Magazine Rocks!!

Expecting models has offices in La and Ny and I know they will book you out of Atlanta.. Send them your best professional modeling pics and a couple snapshots of you now, with your belly- push that belly out ; ) because you will work more once your belly looks at about 7 months or so. Also, look for modeling jobs locally through castingnetworks.com and call local agencies like Click or Factor and see if they rep models for maternity.. Good Luck!!!!

Hi Llisa! I live in the Miami market and I am sure there are tons of jobs and opportunities for exposure here. I’ve been trying to break into the modeling industry for years but I guess i haven’t had the best advice about where or how to start! I’ve always been told I should model before I got pregnabt but with people constantly telling me even now I should try maternity modeling i really want to give it another try! I’ll be taking a couple of shots soon and I’ll be taking your advice, keeping it natural and sending them out to as many agencies as possible! I would LOVE to be working like crazy right now.

    Hi Lisa & Brittani,
just wanted to update you all “click” is currently closed in MIA, they are just in New York now. I called them this morning to ask if they rep mat.models/talent and that’s how I found out. Currently with a few mother agencys here in MIA, im 2 months and nervous to tell them, which is why I called click in 1st place. Just trying to get a backup plan. The gentleman on the phone at click was AMAZING, he told me to” put on my big girl panties and just tell them already!!” Lol, very motivational, I will tell them this week :)
LOVE this posting btw, your digitals are beautiful! Going to watch your you tube vid now!

Thanks for the update Katie! You don’t have to tell your agency you are pregnant until you can’t work anymore (when you start showing and can’t fit into the clothes) Geez, I worked as a model until I was 6 months and no one knew!!! lol Once you tell your agency your pregnant they WILL send someone else in your place because they are going to assume you’ve gained weight and are big. You”’ know when you are ready to stop fashion modeling and do maternity. That guy on the phone is funny though!!!
But you definitely should find Maternity modeling representation.. Send your book and recent snaps to Liza at expecting models in NY and LA. Make sure you make your tummy look as big as possible!! :) Thanks for the compliments, I’m so happy you like my posts!!! Mae sure you comment on my youtube vids too!!! xoxoooox L

    Hi Lisa-
Thanks for the great info! I’m an currently doing research on how to get into maternity modeling. This is my fourth pregnancy and have always wanted to do it but never have. I am not a model but would really love to try it out. I’m a fitness instructor and am now 13 weeks pregnant. Do you know of any reputable agencies in the Atlanta area that represent maternity models? Thanks for any info you can provide! I’m going to check out your video on how to make maternity pics!

    Thanks again,
    Chris.

  7. Hello would you mind letting me know which web host you’re working with? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 different web browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot quicker then most. Can you recommend a good internet hosting provider at a reasonable price? Cheers, I appreciate it!

  8. Lisa says:

What in the world does this have to do with maternity modeling? LOL BLUEHOST.com

  9. Lisa says:

Yeah models scams are everywhere. Most people do not understand that you do not have to pay to become a model. You need to just send in simple snapshots of yourself to agencies and if you have what they are looking for then they WILL call you! But… now that you are pregnant, you have to send your images from your book and snapshots to expecting models in LA or NY. that bascically is the only way to work for your pregnancy and see all those clients.. good luck!

  10. Lisa says:

    Hi Chris,

Congrats on the pregnancy! Wow, your fourth- AMAZING!

Expecting Models Agency in NY/LA works with models in Atlanta. The are really the only agency that reps pregnant models and they have all the clients. You just need to send them your info and pictures, upload it to expectingmodels.com Send recent pics of your showing your bump- Keep sending in pictures every month until you hear from then. They most likely will contact you once your bump is closer to 5 or 6 months, they like a big belly!
Also, set up an account at castingnetworks.com and submit yourself for local jobs for maternity stuff.. you will find good jobs on here too.
I hope this helps.. Thanks! xo Lisa

  11. Good work Lisa. I love the info. Regards Lawrence
